Twenty-Two

George couldn't tear his eyes away from her. Every fibre in his body wanted him to dart forward and take Melitta in his arms. He couldn't be imagining the invitation in her eyes.

Except…his brain refused to let him. She was Lady Melitta, companion to a queen, and he was…little more than a cobbler. Which meant he must be daydreaming.

"Milady? Sir Knight?" A maidservant dropped a deep curtsy in the doorway. "There's a young priest downstairs, seeking the hero who killed them robbers on the coast road. He's fair wild about it, too. Says he won't eat or drink or rest until he's spoken to you." She looked at George.

He wanted to tell her she had the wrong person, and it was Milady the priest wanted, for the most he'd done was butcher the robbers' bodies for their heads and then collect the bounty for his bag of grisly remains, but he needed to escape from her chamber before temptation won him over and he did something stupid.

The lady who'd killed a dozen with one blow would end him just as easily as any of the giants. She truly was some ancient goddess of war, come to earth to…well, what she'd come for, he wasn't sure. But she'd already conquered his heart, and he had no doubt she could conquer many more, if she chose to.

George nodded, then followed the maid downstairs. A woman's light tread behind him told him Melitta had followed, and why not? George could no more stop her than he could prevent the sun from rising.

The priest was a beanpole of a man who didn't look much older than George himself, yet his slumped shoulders and cavernous eyes spoke of troubles he'd endured that no man should be subject to.

"What troubles you, Father?" George asked.

The priest's eyes drank him in like a thirsty man's first gulp of water, before spitting him out again as he realised his saviour was a mirage. "Nothing and no one can help me," the priest said. "Unless I can find a man who slays monsters no one else can touch."

"Valiant Sir George here slayed a dozen giants. Cut their heads off with his sword," the maid said proudly, as though she had witnessed this remarkable feat. "He's the man you want, Father."

The priest's eyes widened. "You?"

George couldn't blame him. He knew he hardly looked like a hero. The sort of knight a lady like Melitta might look on with love. He sighed. "Two. I killed two giants. Not twelve." And, as honesty had truly taken hold of him, he added, "And I took their heads off with a knife. Severing a spine is dull work for a sword."

The priest's jaw dropped. "You killed two giants with only a knife?" He swallowed, still staring at George. "Perhaps you are the hero I seek."

George inclined his head, waiting. He could hear Melitta behind him, but she didn't say a word. Probably wanting to hear what the priest had to say before deciding whether to offer her help.
